Morning BEE pupils only: World Book Day storytelling workshop - make a book 'My Favourite Things' (10:45-11:45)
- Introductions and badge making - using pre-cut shapes and colours
- Circle activity, favourite colours and food
- Sharing two stories - The Boy Who Loved Books & 'On The Moon'
- Big Group activity - describing words for a specific favourite item
- Small group activity - with pre cut treasure chests - think about your favourite toy - food - hobby etc
- Write/draw favourites on the treasure chest template.
- Select one item and write or scribe adjectives to describe the item.
- Activity 1 - draw your item and make a describing word frame - using colours and collage
- Activity 2 - What am I? - in pairs
- Compiling big book - and sharing other books
- Looking at the group book together and reading together
Afternoon BEE pupils only: Storytelling and developing a character (14:15-15:15)
- Storytelling Circle - one word each to tell a story.
- 'Consequences' - the structure of a story.
- Think of 3 adjectives to describe you. How does description give the readers a better understanding of the character, or identify with the character?
- Character Questionnaire. When building a character, the author has to know much more about the character than you think!
- Getting To Know Your Character - role-play an interview with The Big Bad Wolf. What would you like to know about the character?
- Role-play in pairs. Try and find out as much about the other person's character as you can. How will you say things to express your character? Does s/he speak loudly, or quietly? Do they lie, or are they honest?
- Think of three adjectives to describe the other person's character.
- As a group discuss what you have found out about your partner's character. Did you find anything out about YOUR OWN character?
- Volunteers to take questions from the whole group.
- Stories and newspaper articles - some differences.
- Decide which one you want to try. Use a character - either yours or your partner's and write a story or newspaper article about them. You can cut out headlines / pictures provided or make-up your own.
- Share the stories - talk about what happened. Did you believe in the characters? How did the story make you feel? What did you like about it?
The workshops and book fair are run by Sylvia and Selina Benterman, Independent Usborne Representatives and Event Organisers in France, who both have experience of organising and delivering fun educational events. Sylvia was the manager of Norfolk Family Learning, a council initiative to encourage play and learning, working in partnership with schools and Surestarts. Selina was assistant manager and workshop organiser for Inspire Discovery Centre, a creative museum for children in Norwich, and has a degree in Creative writing.
